Robin Hood Launches Novel Fundraising Competition to Fuel Poverty-Fighting Programs Serving Low-Income New Yorkers
The Pick-A-Ticker Competition gives Wall Street investors the chance to display their prowess while funding solutions to poverty that seed opportunities for those most in need
NEW YORK, NY – October 21, 2024 –Today, Robin Hood, New York’s largest local poverty-fighting philanthropy, announced the launch of a novel fundraising stock-picking competition to fuel the fight against poverty in New York City. The initiative, The Robin Hood Pick-A-Ticker: A Fundraiser for Robin Hood (and your Favorite Charity!), is presented in partnership with Bloomberg L.P.
“Quantitative analysis and risk assessment undergird the majority of what our industry does. Those who do it consistently well build reputations and fortunes,” said Robin Hood, Founder and Co-Chairman of Tudor Investment Corporation, Paul Tudor Jones II. “Rather than just do it for personal gain, why not do it for a good cause as well? The Robin Hood Pick-A-Ticker allows investors to display their expertise and help New Yorkers in need, giving low-income families a fair shot at opportunities that transform lives.”
Every year, investors pitch their “best ideas” from the stage of the J.P. Morgan/Robin Hood Investors Conference. The conference is renowned for the number of quality speakers on stage and provides attendees with investment insights, market perspectives, and strategies from leading names in business, investing, and policy.
This year’s conference, the 12th annual convening, will be held on October 23, 2024, in New York City at Spring Studios. Conference attendees will be invited along with any other qualifying interested parties to participate in the Pick-A-Ticker competition by submitting their own best ideas for fun in support of a worthy cause. “Best ideas” presenters at this year’s J.P. Morgan/Robin Hood Investors Conference include David Rosen, Rubric Capital Management; Mohammed Anjarwala, Advent Global Opportunities; David Einhorn, Greenlight Capital; and Ricky Sandler, Eminence Capital. Attendees will also hear from Karen Karniol-Tambour, the Co-CIO of Bridgewater and Scott Bessent from Key Square.
Structured much like a March Madness Bracket, Pick-A-Ticker participants will select their best investment ideas, one long and one short, competing against one another over a six-month period for fun to support a charitable cause. Each participant makes a $10,000 donation to be eligible for entry. At the end of the competition, two-thirds of the total funds raised will be allocated to Robin Hood, and one-third of the funds raised will be allocated according to the winner’s designation: to Robin Hood, one of its grantmaking portfolios, or to an existing Robin Hood grantee. Robin Hood funds more than 300 direct-service nonprofit organizations across New York’s five boroughs.
Participants can be individuals or funds, and a fund or individual may contribute multiple ideas. Bloomberg will maintain a leaderboard enabling participants and interested followers to track performance over the duration of the competition. The leaderboard will also be available on the Bloomberg Terminal and at www.bloomberg.com.
To be entered, participants must submit their ideas and make their donation by October 28, 2024, at 4 p.m. (ET). The competition will run from that date until April 20, 2025, at 4 p.m. (ET). Long-pick and short-pick performance will be combined to determine portfolio performance. The participant with the best performing long and short pair over the competition period will be deemed the winner.
Winners will be announced at Robin Hood’s Annual Benefit on May 12, 2025. To view the rules of the Pick-A-Ticker competition or to register to participate, visit robinhood.org. Public registration opens today and closes on Monday, October 28th at 4 p.m. (ET).
Since 2012, the J.P. Morgan/Robin Hood Investors Conference has raised nearly $60 million to fight poverty in New York City. Each dollar raised through ticket sales for the J.P. Morgan/Robin Hood Investors Conference and the Pick-A-Ticker competition will go directly towards Robin Hood’s poverty-fighting mission, fueling grantmaking programs that are helping to make New York City the greatest engine of opportunity for all New Yorkers.
